Hurrah!
We got off to a good start for this, the most challenging day, with a snapped chain. Much sweating, cursing and oily hands later we (for “we” read “Stephan”) fixed the chain and we were off again. Stopping for lunch before attacking the hills proper, we decided to stay in uniform for some inexplicable reason and go up some of Britain’s hardest hills in 100% polyester and foam fancy dress. Again a major theme was sweat. Lots of it…
Anyway, we got to the top, cycling all the way (with some stops for getting breath back) and celebrated not dying on the climb with a shouted “for the glory of Rome!!” and a handshake. Then white hot disk brakes all the way to Ravenglass and a rapturous welcome from wives and family.
So with Gift Aid and donations promised but yet to come we’ve raised over 1,000 quid for a great cause. You can still click Charity up in the top right to fling a few coins at us if you think cycling across Britain dressed as Romans is a stupid thing to do.
Would I do it again? We’re already planning the next one! For the glory of Rome!

Really like the Roman style headgear – those Romans were very technologically advanced.
Weren’t they just? All part of the authentic, historically accurate costumes…
Did cycling in a skirt present any interesting insights on the fast downhill stretches? Just wondering…
We had full lycra cycling shorts underneath, so modesty was protected at all times. in fact I hitched up my skirts for most downhills…
