Setting the record straight

By | 11 June, 2009

I guess I was lucky that as a child I was never bullied because of my diabetes. I was always really open about it, everyone knew I had it, I talked about it a lot and it was never really an issue.

Bullying is a huge issue for some kids with diabetes though, and anecdotally seems to be on the increase as publicity around Type 2 increases, misconceptions around Type 1 increase too.

Setting the record straight is a great little film made by Diabetes UK aimed at educating people about Type 1

diabetes and stopping young people from experiencing bullying based on ignorance and misconceptions.

Take a look, what do you think?

A good film – I suppose I was never subject to bullying, what with being aged 28 at diagnosis and not really frightened of people at that point.
Interestingly enough, someone did once try to bully me at school. However, they didn’t know that my brother used to regularly torture me, etc., as big brothers do. So – much to the potential bully’s surprise – I beat the living bejasus out of him.
You know, I’m still proud of it 25 years later!
