Gary Mabbutt was my hero as a child, he was the only diabetic I knew. I interviewed him when I was a teenager and he was a really nice chap.
I think my parents were searching deperately for famous diabetics for me to look up to so I used to have a poster of pop singer Marie Wilson on my wall when I was 5. I still don’t think I know anything she ever sang, just that she had an impressive bee hive hair do and was my token diabetic celebrity alongside Gary Mabbutt!
