If someone had told me, 39 years ago, that I would be quite happy to place my diabetes control in the hands of a machine, I’d have laughed at them. (Actually, I’d have gone ‘Have you brought me a present?’ because […]

Post-hypo lucozade? Why would I want to drink that disgusting stuff post-hypo? During hypo, yes. And I’m mildly peeved that it will cost me more to get myself out of situations I didnt ask to be in in the first place (ie low blood sugars). But at least its only v. sugary drinks at the moment. When he starts trying to tax things like Fruit…[Read more]

Personally I’d ditch the consultations. I get nothing out of them. But I’d fight tooth and nail to keep my pump – with attached CGM if that would fit in my budget. I’d keep the eye tests but forego the foot tickling at this stage, provided I could change my mind on it in the future.
I dont know that giving everyone their own budget is actually a…[Read more] -

You are, of course, both right and wrong. (Hark at me, sitting on the fence.)
I cannot (or rather, should not, because it is quite within my capability of doing so) tell Gladys what she must do. But I can suggest […] -

You have spare bits of sandwich? Are you not carb counting properly?

Basal 60% bolus 40%. Interesting to note that the basals put up here all have a dip at 4pm. What is happening at 6pm across the country to make us all need less basal?

No worries – good for others to see how different everyone is 🙂

I find that using the percentages the other way round works better – just a small amount (about 25%) as an immediate, followed by the rest over about an hour.
It does depend on what I’m eating – the faster acting the carbs are, the more I put in up fromt. It seems to work well for me that way, but it will depend on how well or otherwise you…[Read more] -

Ah yes, child-proofing. Not my own, but a time when I had my niece staying with me for a few days. My kit was all left on my bedside cabinet (where it usually lives). I walked in to find her carefully arranging […]

I think this new version of the forum is out to get me. It first posted my comment onto a long ago post (Tims a Criminal or something) and then seems to have deleted it altogether!

One thing I’d miss if I was in that situation (ie, having forgotten my meter) is that I wouldn’t have the insulin calculator that I now rely on so much – when I first got my meter (which pairs to my pump, and […]

First: disclaimer – I’m also a pump user and my basals move about as much as @Tim‘s. And I now see why I could never get ‘good’ control on MDI – there’s no way Lantus could match my rollercoaster needs.
What you describe does sound a bit like the dawn phenomenon I used to get – it only really happened if I didn’t get on with my day – so I guess…[Read more] -

Ah, but isnt Eva your own personal diamond? 🙂 (And how you remember what day you were diagnosed I have no idea. I just guess a month based on a dim recollection, and dont bother with the day, just one at random does me.)

I must be very lucky. I’ve had my pump for nearly 3 years and I’ve only had about 5 or 6 failures. And no kinked cannulas. (crosses fingers that I haven’t just jinxed myself…)

I was told, when I first got my pump, that doing the odd correction bolus in the day (ie one or two, I think) was actually better for you – as it meant you were actually acting like your pancreas does (or rather, […]
