Male / female diabetic ratios

A typical diabetic man and woman, yesterday

The other day, with nothing better to do, I was idly looking through the statistics which are generated by our Facebook page. Facebook handily gives administrators a breakdown of the demographic, Zeitgeist if you will,  of our page. Given that users give away a whole load of information about themselves on their profiles, said breakdown is actually pretty detailed.

The main statistic that leapt out at me was the male to female balance. Apparently males make up 23% of our fans and females 72% (I’m not sure what happened to the other 5%). I then had a quick tally of users who’ve signed up as registered users of the blog and forums here at your soaraway Shoot Up and the ratios were pretty much the same, with only a slightly higher percentage of males than Facebook.

Obviously the male to female ratio of diabetics is pretty much 50-50, so why does the blog have this bias I wonder? Are women more interested in their health than men and so seek out other sources of information on the Intermaweb? Do men just grin, bear it and ignore advice from anyone else? Do men just hate sharing stuff about their health problems?

I haven’t a clue and I’m certainly not going to share in public. Perhaps our female readers might like to discuss it below, while us men clam up.

    Well that’s easy. Girls are better than boys. What more is there to say? 😉

    @alison – fair point, I’ll turn off commenting on this post – you’ve answered the question!

    What shocking examples of anti-men sexism we have here! It’s like every bloody World-Cup related advert on at the moment. Every man is portrayed as a barely sentient Neanderthal who lives only for pizza, beer and football displayed on 40″ tellies. It really gets my goat, dammit!

      What shocking example of anti-Neanderthalism we have here…portraying a competent top-of-the-rock carnivore as something that is pizzaphilic…tut tut! And comfort yourself with the fact that you are female until week 7 of fetal development, when your lazy gonads start drooping downwards 😉

    @Tim – I completely agree that this is a shocking generalisation. I’m sure there must be some men out there who don’t like pizza 😉

    @alison – puh! 😉

    I do actually like the World Cup because it means everything (aside from pubs) are empty when matches are on and you can get a lot more done. However, I’m not going to go on about how dull football is – there’s only one thing more boring than football and that’s people banging on about how boring football is!

    One of the benefits of reaching my advanced age is that one has trained one’s brain to be selective about what registers with it and what doesn’t. For that reason I am now forced to ask what this ‘foosebal’ is and what is a ‘world cup’; is it anything to do with mixing one’s drinks? 😉
